Crap Service of the Week Award goes to .... London 2012 Shop, Canary Wharf

Welcome to another Crap Service of the Week Award.

If you weren’t around last week, this is when I get to slag off service providers who have failed to deliver. 
Today, the award goes to the London 2012 Shop in Canary Wharf - the official place to by memorabilia for the Olympic Games.


They earned the accolade after a sterling delivery of crap service last weekend.

A friend who wanted to buy four pin badges, he was specific in what he wanted as they come in different sizes.

The conversation went something like this:






Customer: Do you have these in any other sizes?
Assistant: (playing with earring in left ear) No.
Customer: Oh, they do come in other sizes, I was wondering if I had missed them.
Assistant: (shrug)

Brief interlude as customer goes off to have another look, returns with five pin badges.

Customer: I’ll have five of these please.
Assistant: (plays with left earring)
Customer: How much is that?
Assistant: £30
Customer: (hands over money) Thanks.
Assistant: Bag?
Customer: No, thank you. Thanks very much.
Assistant:  (blank stare, looks at finger nails)
Customer: (to me) can you believe that just happened?
Me: Yes

The sad thing is, I wasn’t surprised.

What was he expecting? Assistance? Come on, you have got to be having a laugh - not in Britain in 2012.

A ‘please’ or ‘thank you’? -  don’t make me laugh.



I imagine the same level of service will greet the thousands of tourists that will visit that shop over the next few weeks.

The shop that proudly represents the UK as we gear up to host the Olympic Games.

And which today is awarded the Crap Service of the Week Award.

I t was Oscar Wilde who wrote “the only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about”. I have nothing more to add other than to share the following, posted on Tabloid Watch - the website which purports to blog about “bad journalism”. Jedward spotted in the city, but what were they up to?

I know that hair, I thought to myself as I passed London’s Monument on the way home from work. Those ridiculously elongated, spiky locks, wacky costumes and irritating voices were an immediate giveaway. And of course it only took me a second to recognise Jedward – the X-Factor twins whose ludicrous image and inability to hold a note have propelled them to (semi) fame. I have nothing against them, I am only being mean, and credit where it’s due, they are fiercely determined, and have built up a pretty unique act for themselves. So well done brothers Grimes. But it has to be said, the act is based around being cringe-worthingly bad at everything they try. They only made it through on the X-Factor because Simon Cowell was won over by their determination and self-belief – and let’s face it, that is really all it takes. It’s been three weeks since Boris unshackled most of the UK from a year and a half of Covid incarceration. We are now ‘free’, whatever that means, because it feels anything but.  What was I expecting­? Street parties, jubilant crowds running the streets, mask-burnings, a national celebration with Gary Barlow freedom anthem live from Hyde Park? I’m not sure. But certainly not this. I’ve emerged into a strange new world I must navigate with unremitting caution, one eye trained sniper-like on a microbial menace muscling in on my every move.
