Red, white and blue potatoes give the perfect mash up for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee

I’ve heard about being patriotic, but this really takes the biscuit – or to be more correct the potato.

As every corner of the country turns red, white and blue in the run up to the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, a online gardening site has joined in the act with royal-themed spuds.

Those with a deep-rooted fear of carbohydrates- look away now.

GardeningExpress.co.uk has  a selection of potatoes for sale which when cut open reveal the colours of the Union Flag.

The potatoes - Highland Burgundy Red, British Queen and  Salad Blue  -are being sold as part of a royal pack to mark the big event in just over a week, although I imagine it will be long after the Jubilee has ended that gardeners will be able to dig up their regal wurzels.

The unusual vegetables look like normal potatoes on the outside, but  the flesh is coloured.

Apparently the blue ones get their regal hue from a compound called anthocyanin,  purported to have health benefits including protection from cancer and other diseases.

Given my entry yesterday it seems they may have arrived at just the right time.

And these pots come with a history.

The British Queen is more than 100 years old – the brown knobbly variety that is, not Her Majesty.

The Highland Burgundy Red dates back to 1936 when they were used to add colour to a meal for the Duke of Burgundy.

Salad Blue was first grown in Scotland in the 1900’s – apparently it makes great  for mash but not so good for boiling.

“These three spuds will appeal you young and old gardeners alike and will prove a real talking point when they’re cooked and dished up for dinner,” said Chris Bonnett, of GardeningExpress.co.uk

So if you fancy a bit of patriotic gardening, these look like they will be right up your street.

The one off collection of a bag of 12  costs £5.99.
